Innovative Sustainability Research at Spring ACE Presentations

The 四虎影视's Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) recently hosted its Spring Academic Capstone Experience (ACE) presentations, where graduating students showcased innovative research and internship experiences tackling pressing environmental challenges.

Diverse Sustainability Initiatives on Display

The event featured presentations from students across various concentrations, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability work. Presenters shared insights from their research and internship experiences with local governments, private companies, and non-profit organizations.

Our top presenter, , presented her research on benchmarking mandatory commercial recycling programs in Florida, specifically examining feasibility for Hillsborough County. With the county's landfill nearing capacity and generating over 1.2 million tons of waste annually, Victoria's research offered practical recommendations for implementing successful commercial recycling mandates. At her internship, Durand emphasized that the Hillsborough County promoted sustainable waste management practices through community outreach and education and noted that contamination remains a significant challenge for recycling programs and highlighted the importance of public education campaigns.

Climate Resilience and Energy

Multiple presentations addressed climate adaptation strategies, exploring how regions across the U.S.  and abroad are grappling with significant climate impacts. Presenters examined various dimensions of adaptation, emphasizing that beyond technical and environmental solutions, political and social barriers often hinder effective implementation.

, who focused her research on nuclear energy, presented findings on public perceptions of nuclear power and waste storage in Florida. Her survey revealed that while many participants viewed nuclear energy as a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, most expressed concerns about nuclear waste disposal near their communities. The research emphasized that trust is a critical factor in successful nuclear energy policy implementation. Isabella was also voted second best presenter, reflecting the impact and clarity of her work.

Applied Learning and Professional Development

Many students highlighted how their internships and research projects allowed them to apply theoretical sustainability concepts learned from the classroom in real-world settings. Students worked with organizations including the City of Tampa's Sustainability and Resilience team, GoSpace (focused on electric vehicle charging infrastructure), and Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program.
